Bruce Lee Gallanter, the Downtown Music Gallery NY (08/04/2022)
I'm not so sure when Belgian drummer Raf Vertessen moved to NY, but he has played here at DMG on several occasions. This is Mr. Vertessen's first release as a leader and he has picked a strong quartet: Anna Webber (multi-bandleader, composer & collaborator with Dave Douglas, Harris Eisenstadt & others) on tenor sax, Adam O'Farrill (grandson of Latin/jazz legend Chico O'Farrill & member of several bands: Mary Halvorson, Gabriel Zucker) and young bass wiz Nick Dunston (with Dave Douglas, Amirtha Kidambi & Zack Clarke).

So far, Mr. Vertessen has done mostly improvised sets here at DMG but he did compose and direct this quartet. The title track, "LO1", begins with a sprawling theme for the tenor and trumpet to play with dream-like harmonies while Mr. Vertessen plays somber mallets in slow waves as the quartet comes together, rising and falling as one. Vertessen is a master mallets player and sounds great at creating an organic pulse or throb with Dunston's bass to ground the great tenor sax/trumpet frontline. The quartet expand freely on "#1", building to an intense yet tightly wound conclusion. On each piece, Vertessen gets the two horns to switch positions or directions, thus keeping the band and listeners on their toes to figure out which strategies are being utilized. Both Ms. Webber's tenor and Mr. O'Farrill's trumpet play warm one moment and then twist their notes in odd ways in the next section. When I listened to this disc at the store earlier this week, I liked what I heard but couldn't pay too much attention. Now that I am listening to it at home without distractions, it sounds even better with several layers of songs or ideas moving around one another in a more connected way. And more is revealed each time I listen.

Tom Greenland, the New York City Jazz Record p.16 (09/2021)
A debut record as leader, a ‘maiden voyage’, is an exciting moment when most personal musical visions can be laid bare.
Ever since Belgian drummer Raf Vertessen relocated to our city in 2016 he has circulated in creative company: his quartet is tenor saxophonist Anna Webber, trumpeter Adam O’Farrill and bassist Nick Dunston and his inaugural album, LOI, was mixed and mastered by Jaimie Branch and Eivind Opsvik, respectively. The hour-long suite was recorded in Köln’s LOFT after a two-week tour. While the leader is certainly active, his playing vibrant, his tuneful yet elastic compositions the focal point, his input is nevertheless subservient to the overall sound, which has remarkable dialectic exchanges between Webber, the most adventurous of the four, and O’Farrill, who, despite his laid-back persona, exudes the ebullience of a latter-day Clifford Brown. Dunston, least audible of all, is nonetheless an essential cornerstone, completing the synergism of this delightfully listenable outing.

Patrick Auwelaert, Ohlalala Be!Music Magazine (09/06/2021)

The Sound and the Fury van William Faulkner getoonzet.

Chapeau!

John Sharpe, All About Jazz (29/03/2021) ****1/2
Belgian drummer Raf Vertessen's quartet unites a mouth-watering array of talent, and he keeps them busy on his leadership debut LOI. Since arriving in Brooklyn, in 2016, Vertessen has dug in deep, enlisting saxophonist Anna Webber, trumpeter Adam O'Farrill and bassist Nick Dunston, all acclaimed leaders in their own right, to realize his charts in a way which allows them full expression while at the same time respecting compositional boundaries drawn largely from the free jazz vernacular.

Opening with the title cut, Vertessen offers the first intimation of the jostling camaraderie between the horns which illuminates the album. It begins as an aural stretching exercise, sustaining long sounds which repeat and fray until unfolding into measured colloquy. From there a catchy riff emerges, around which tenor saxophone and trumpet cavort and color. The interaction between Webber and O'Farrill comes in a variety of guises—conversational, supportive and in simultaneous flight—but continually morphs between the different modes, even during the course of a single piece.

Smart programming engenders a suite-like vibe, as the early tracks—often working with skeletal thematic elements which surface gradually and unexpectedly—hold something back, barely reaching the boil. As a result, the longer pieces, with their harder edges and greater individual opportunities, later in the program pack an even bigger punch. Several numbers run together into extended blocks successfully melding together diverse feelings into an overall rich and satisfying tapestry, cloaked in ambiguity and surprise.

Cameos pepper this ensemble music. Vertessen nudges, hints and, occasionally, attacks but, in keeping with the collective ethos, only takes the briefest of solos on the final "#2," which transmutes into a spacious duet with Dunston's elongated tone elaborations. Elsewhere the bassist toggles between pizzicato punditry and insistent patterns which reinforce the structural foundations. Morse-coded urgency erupts on "Layers" as Vertessen taps into Webber's flair, so well showcased on her own Rectangles (OOYH, 2020), for using limited material to generate seemingly endless possibilities. O'Farrill serves as a potent foil to the saxophonist, sometimes more melodic, but often venturing equally far out.

Whether it is the clattery percussion framed by abstract murmurs, scrapes, and flurries on "#4," the lurching staccato unisons of "Fake 3:7," or the woozy late-night atmosphere invoked as trumpet and tenor sax circle around each other on "#14," Vertessen's ghostly frameworks hit the sweet spot while retaining freshness and looseness. It makes for a carefully plotted excursion which lands with the laid-back glow of a saunter in the park.

Eric Therer, Jazzaround magazine (15/03/2021)

Shining example of modern mainstream improv except for those who figure Jazz evolution ceased around 1960, this maiden voyage by Belgium-born, Brooklyn-based drummer Raf Vertessen showcases his compositional skills as much as his drumming. That's serendipitous since the drummer, who has also worked with the likes of Ches Smith and Ingrid Laubrock is a colorist rather than a basher.

His choice of associates shows his good taste as well. Trumpeter Adam O' Farrill and bassist Nick Dunston are busy with many New York ensembles, as is tenor saxophonist Anna Webber, who additionally leads her bands. Actually a suite rather than a collection of random tunes, each of the performances blends into and sets up the subsequent tracks. Rambling and harmonized the group moves at various tempi exposing flashes of capillary high pitches and reed slurs, string clumps and woody drum splats, rumbles, rim shots and cymbal claps. Attaining more unity as the program evolves, mid-range bass string rubs and drum bounces help amplify more exploratory impulses from the horn players encompassing contrapuntal variants from top-of-range whistles and renal scoops from Weber that explode into glossolalia met by O'Farrill's packed flutter tonguing. The place-marking stop-time march that is "FAKE" accents the dramatic elation that characterizes the second half of the suite.

Climax and resolution comes with "Cardinali 2+3" and "#2", the final tracks, as brassy whines and reed split tones move up and down the scale finally reaching concordance when Webber's double tongued exposition joins with O'Farrill's sharp arpeggios and Vertessen's cymbal slaps and drum clumps. This turns the melancholy theme into a final expression of up-tempo triumph. That noun could probably define LOI in general. Hopefully soon there will be a follow-up to this impressive debut.

Ben Taffijn, Nieuwe Noten Nederland (18/02/2021)

George W. Harris, Jazz Weekly US (08/02/2021)
Anna Webber plays tenor sax, Adam O’Farrill is on trumpet, Nick Dunston plays the bass with Raf Vertessen leading from the drums on this collection of originals by the stick man. The horns puff like cirrus clouds on the mournful “LOI” and hover with long tones during “#1”. Things get a bit squawky with some mouthpiece musings and tonal trials on “Layers” and the horns get into a Neopolitan traffic jam during the rush hour of “#4” with buzzing, bowing and crashes on fender benders. Some loose Mingusy moments pop up on “Cardinali 2+3” and the team hobbles along like a three legged race to “FAKE 3:7”. Dangling conversations.

"This Belgian percussionist is a perfect fit with the avant-jazz approach developing in Brooklyn, releasing an interesting debut with a focus on garrulous collective free jazz and prog."

We schrijven 2016.

Glenn Astarita, All About Jazz (14/11/2020) ****1/2
"Since relocating from his native Belgium to New York City, superb drummer and wily composer Raf Vertessen has ingratiated his talents into the region's always burgeoning improv and avant-garde musicscape, performing with upper-echelon musicians, evidenced on this first-rate debut as a leader.

Here, the drummer cites influences from the dynamic international contingent of 1960s free/progressive jazz performers who turned conventional jazz frameworks upside down. The drummer's works include budding layers of sound, by using building blocks amid blossoming cadences, fractured funk beats, free jazz lanes, and gushing outbreaks by trumpeter Adam O'Farrill and tenor saxophonist Anna Webber. But that's not all. The band makes no concessions as they glaringly enjoy formulating all the creative aspects atop a given pulse or theme. Throughout, the frontline delves into cat and mouse-like dialogues and complex, odd-metered unison choruses along with dusty fadeouts or when motifs prompt imagery of the musicians cruising along a curvy hiking trail towards a summit.

The semi-structural components equate to music with a message, absorbed by the ear of the beholder. Moreover, they flirt with minimalism, yet "#4" features Webber's hypersonic lines above frothy undercurrents, where bassist Nick Dunston and the leader propagate a rolling and tumbling pace with unrelenting energy and verve. Rapid-fire solos abound within undulating grooves and offbeat rhythms as the element of surprise is ongoing. Indeed, the program is chock full of tricky mini-arrangements and sizzling dynamics. However, "IRR (1) & #3" is a rather skittish free form romp with a robust gait and numerous dips and spikes. Whereas Vertessen's massive press rolls and snappy hits prod the soloists into exploration mode, leading to brash, regal statements, and more revved up unison choruses as themes reappear and transparently dissolve into nothingness.

The final track, "#2," is introspective with an intimate and solemn undertow, launched by Dunston's weeping arco phrasings. It's an airy tune, although the ensemble opens the playing field during the coda. In sum, Vertessen's quartet turns back the hands of time with an ultra-modern purview on this unexpected 2020-issued gem"

"Not knowing of Brooklyn-based Belgian drummer Raf Vertessen, LOI caught my attention because of his bandmates – trumpeter Adam O'Farrill, saxophonist Anna Webber, and bassist Nick Dunston. Webber, in particular, has made her mark over the last several years as a composer and bandleader, while O'Farrill and Dunston are showing up on more and more recordings of note.

Roughly composed, the music of LOI also incorporates elements of surprise and looseness. While a studio recording, it was put down after the quartet toured Europe for two weeks, playing variations of the material. Thus, the album has a live and open feel while still exhibiting a logical structure.

Vertessen is as comfortable with complex themes as he is with freely-improvised atmospherics and blowouts. His approach is rattling, exploring the nooks and crannies of his set with some use of extended techniques. If anything, he channels the great European free jazz drummers (Bennink, Oxley, Nilssen-Love) but with influences from the modern New York scene.

Webber and O'Farrill are an interesting pair, the former more ready to go outside while the latter plays in a somewhat less radical fashion. This comes together as a push-and-pull, with Webber testing the boundaries and O'Farrill staying mostly grounded. Webber's cerebral approach is on full display – fans of her previous releases will find much to like here.

Dunston's contributions are the most subtle and suffer from modestly low volume in the mix, but he does not intend to stand out. While staying busy, his playing is unobtrusive. Thus, it is a bit easy to miss at first. But a thorough listen of LOI focusing on the bass lines is rewarding in and of itself.

LOI is an intriguing and compelling release from a relative newcomer. It covers a great deal of ground sonically and texturally. Case in point, there is a certain playfulness to some of Vertessen's tunes that breaks up what is otherwise a serious and attention-demanding listen. Highly recommended."

Brad Cohan, Jazztimes US (03/11/2020)
"The dense vocabulary that Belgium-born, Brooklyn-based drummer, percussionist, and composer Raf Vertessen possesses is fit for a wise veteran. The catch is, he's only 27. In just a short stint, Vertessen has quickly established himself as a force in New York City's improvised music scene, counting avant-garde titans like Joe Morris, Joe McPhee, Ingrid Laubrock, and Ches Smith as mentors.

The influence of those luminaries—particularly Smith—resounds on LOI, Vertessen's standout debut as a bandleader. But the loose-jointed Belgian has his own voice, which he employs with ever-shifting tempo changes and mathy fury that give the listener a case of whiplash. While Vertessen is perfectly adept at artful nuance, he's constantly in your face throughout the nine tracks on LOI, thwacking and thumping his drum kit like a mad beat scientist.

However, Vertessen couldn't pull this off alone. He's assembled an all-star-level group to help bring his intricately woven pieces to life: tenor saxophonist Anna Webber, trumpeter Adam O'Farrill, and upright bassist Nick Dunston. They meld seamlessly into the fray, playing close-to-perfect complements to Vertessen's knotty structures.

With Webber and O'Farrill's bouncy, turbulent lines zigzagging over one another and Dunston providing the rhythmic foundation, Vertessen doesn't hang back. Instead, he plays to his strengths with an electrifying array of salvos that progress from slow-building tension to explosive release and back again. That locked-in dynamic comes through on dizzying yet infectious tunes such as the title track, "#4," and "FAKE 3:7." A dominant presence both behind the kit and up front, Raf Vertessen has made quite the debut."

Tor Hammerø, Nettavisen & Blogg.no (16/10/2020)

Pierre Dulieu, DragonJazz (10/2020)
"This is boundary-pushing jazz. An album tending toward exploratory cadences and rasp dissonance with a gift for evocative images. Energy is palpable throughout the album's 9 tracks and it is impossible to not appreciate the band's effortless proficiency to create in the moment. If you like your jazz free and unconventional, you will be willing to take the time to connect with the material and let yourself sink into it."

O's place Jazz Magazine, Issue 26.3 (10/2020)
"Belgian drummer and composer RAF Vertessen arrived in Brooklyn several years ago and now leads a quartet with Anna Webber (t-sax), Adam O' Farrill (t) and Nick Dunston (b). LOI is Raf's debut recording. It starts out slowly with the title track and the music becomes increasingly more engaging. Fully warmed up, the band excelled on the second half of the recording. The best bets are the spontaneous layering of the horns on "Fake 3-7" and "Cardinal 2-3""
